When the summer heat arrives, everyone turns to sweet frozen snacks to cool off and treat the tastebuds. Every city large and small has favorite ice cream parlors; many places enjoy a thriving collection of Mexican ice cream and paleta shops as well. In Columbus, you’ll gravitate toward three shops when you want to beat the summer heat.

On Columbus’ northwest side, Laguna specializes in street snacks like esquites, papas locas, tacos, tortas and churros. But you can round out any visit with a sweet taste like ice cream and shaved ice. For a real treat, order the lagunadas: house-made ice cream topped with the sweet and lightly savory chamoy sauce, spicy chili powder and tamarind candy.

They also serve a rotating selection of 30+ paletas. Top off the menu with sundaes, smoothies and savory snacks, and it’s a favorite stop any time of year.

Diamonds serves a wide range of ice creams, from familiar flavors like chocolate and vanilla to varieties like red or green cactus pear. But favorite tastes at Diamonds are the paletas – popsicles crafted with fresh fruits, cookies and other delights. It’s always delightful just peering into the case to see all the colorful treats lined up. You’ll see combinations like cookies and cream, strawberry mango kiwi, mango chili Tajín, strawberries and cream, brownie vanilla and many more. Find Diamonds in the Hayden Run Plaza and in Linworth, connected to Tomatillos Authentic Mexican restaurant.
