PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A man with what’s described as a violent criminal history is in custody after police say he randomly shot and killed another man at a Phoenix gas station Saturday afternoon.
Around 2 p.m. Saturday, Phoenix police responded to a shooting call at a 76 gas station near Cave Creek and Bell roads and found a man, later identified as 57-year-old Joseph Patruno, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Eduardo Quintero, stayed at the gas station and was arrested. According to court documents, surveillance video from 76 shows Quintero walking through the parking lot toward a man standing next to his pickup truck at a gas pump. Without any provocation, the video then shows the suspect shooting the man multiple times, according to court paperwork.
After he collapsed, Quintero reportedly walked around the bed of the truck, then back toward the man who he allegedly shot again several more times. Per court paperwork, the video shows Quintero beginning to walk away a second time before he turned around and shot him again. Police say Quintero then walked into the gas station and told the clerk he was turning himself in, who reportedly told him to wait outside until police arrived.
Following Quintero’s arrest, officers spoke with witnesses who saw what happened, and investigators soon found a chrome revolver near a water machine at the gas station. His motive is unclear, and per court documents, police say Quintero “shot and killed a random victim.” He was booked for first-degree murder.
Quintero also has previous felony convictions for aggravated assault, misconduct involving weapons, and burglary and is prohibited from owning a firearm.
