A section of West Street in Oneonta will be shut down beginning Monday, March 28th, and remain closed to traffic until late August. Robinson Contracting will remove the existing concrete roadway, replace water mains, sewer lines, drainage pipes, catch basins, utility caps, and fire hydrants.
After the subsurface work is completed the contractor will repave 1500 feet of West Street from Chestnut Street to Center Street with eight inches of new asphalt. The project is budgeted at $1.9 million. It will be paid for with the sale of bonds. City officials said no state or federal money is involved in the project.
“The cost will be distributed over our water, sewer and other bonds,” Gino Huggins, Oneonta’s Senior Civil Engineer, said in a recent CNY News interview.
Traffic will be rerouted from West Street to Church and Center Streets during construction. Side streets Columbia, Birch, Cherry, Franklin, High and Harmon will be open to local traffic only. Existing one way streets in the area will be made two way during the construction period. Parking on High Street will not be allowed.
Officials are discussing alternate off-street parking options with owners of nearby parking lots. The project will also force three Oneonta Public Transit bus stops to be moved and access to some West Street driveways will be blocked during working hours. Crews will be on the job weekdays from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
